ABB, a global technology company specializing in electrification and automation, has announced that its MCR1000 High-Power Rectifier has received an Environmental Product Declaration following completion of a comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment. The MCR1000 is the first rectifier type within ABB’s global High-Power Rectifier portfolio to complete both an LCA and EPD process, providing independently verified environmental data for industrial sustainability reporting, procurement and decarbonization initiatives.

Developed under the guidance of ABB’s global research and development team and manufactured at the company’s Shanghai High-Power Rectifier factory, the MCR1000 supports high-power conversion applications across energy-intensive industries including steel, non-ferrous metals, green hydrogen and chemicals. The EPD provides customers with product-level environmental information that can be incorporated into sustainability assessments and procurement decisions as requirements around supply-chain emissions and life cycle transparency continue to increase.

“As sustainability becomes an increasingly important consideration in industrial investment and procurement, customers need greater transparency into the environmental impact of the technologies they deploy,” said Ralph Burgener, Global Business Unit Manager for High-Power Rectifier in ABB’s Process Industries division. “Achieving EPD certification for MCR1000 is an important milestone, demonstrating how we are embedding life cycle thinking into product development while providing independently verified environmental data our customers can use to support their own sustainability and decarbonization objectives. This is another step in ABB’s commitment to helping industries become more resource efficient through innovative power conversion technologies.”

The Environmental Product Declaration was completed in accordance with internationally recognized ISO standards and is based on an assessment of environmental impacts throughout the product life cycle. Using SimaPro software and the Ecoinvent database, ABB evaluated stages extending from raw material extraction and component manufacturing through assembly, transportation, operation and end-of-life recycling. The resulting LCA also provides ABB with data that can be used to evaluate material selection, manufacturing processes and future product development.

Environmental Product Declarations are becoming increasingly relevant to industrial procurement as manufacturers and end-users look for verified product-level environmental data rather than relying solely on corporate sustainability targets or generalized emissions claims. ABB is positioning the MCR1000 EPD as a tool to support customers evaluating life cycle environmental impacts while addressing sustainability reporting and procurement requirements.

The MCR1000 builds on ABB’s Swiss-developed MCR high-power rectifier platform and has been further developed and manufactured in China since its localization there in 2012. More than 300 MCR systems have been installed worldwide since 1999 across a range of high-power industrial applications.
