Novelis collects production scrap from customer manufacturing operations, separates materials by alloy and returns the recovered aluminum to its own recycling and rolling systems. The metal can then be supplied back into the same or a comparable product stream. This approach is particularly important in automotive and aerospace manufacturing, where alloy composition, formability, strength and surface quality must remain within defined production requirements.

The company is also working to recover more aluminum after products reach the end of their useful lives. Used beverage containers and end-of-life vehicles present different recovery challenges than clean production scrap, including coatings, attachments, mixed alloys and contamination. Novelis combines collection partnerships, sorting technologies, recycling infrastructure and materials research to improve both the volume and quality of secondary aluminum available for reuse.

Alloy development and process engineering support the broader use of recycled material across applications that continue to require specific mechanical and manufacturing performance. Novelis works with customers on material selection, product design and closed-loop systems that preserve the value of aluminum across multiple production cycles. Its current investments also include expanded recycling and rolling capacity intended to support higher recycled content and reduce reliance on primary aluminum.
