About Featured Expert Pegasus Materials BV

Pegasus Materials BV is a materials science company that develops bio-based specialty polymers for industrial applications, including electronics, aerospace, data centers, and industrial 3D printing. The company was founded by Richard Pieters and Chris Schröder and is based at the Brightlands Chemelot Campus in Geleen, the Netherlands. Pegasus Materials combines principles from synthetic biology, chemistry, and materials science to formulate new materials that use renewable, bio-derived feedstocks in place of traditional petrochemicals.

Pegasus Materials’ initial commercial products include Virela-X001, a bio-based high-heat polyamide designed for precision-molded connectors and other electronics applications, and Virela-X002, a partially bio-based polyimide engineered for industrial additive manufacturing with balanced mechanical strength and high thermal tolerance. These materials are being evaluated by OEMs and manufacturing partners seeking alternatives to fossil-based polymers for applications that demand dimensional precision, thermal stability, and mechanical reliability.

The company’s technology platform emphasizes bio-based chemical building blocks to deliver materials with performance characteristics aligned with industrial requirements while reducing dependence on conventional petrochemical inputs. Pegasus Materials has secured seed funding from investors including the industrial biotechnology venture studio Ferment, the regional development agency LIOF, and the chemical partner Fibrant BV to support the transition from pilot-scale production to broader commercial qualification and manufacturing.

Pegasus Materials’ presence at the Brightlands Chemelot Campus positions it within a collaborative network of advanced materials innovators. It provides access to polymerization and compounding expertise to support accelerated materials development and scale-up. Its work reflects broader industry efforts to integrate renewable, sustainable materials into established industrial supply chains without compromising performance standards required in high-technology sectors.
